Register above for upcoming Couch to Trail programmes.  Once registered we will send out additional information to you in preparation for the first session.

Couch to Trail is a 5km running programme, similar to the traditional ‘Couch to 5K’, except we take you off the tarmac and out into nature! In the 8-week programme we will gradually introduce you to different techniques, increasing your cardiovascular fitness along the way, and helping you gain confidence to run off-road.

No; the course has been designed for non-runners, or those with limited running experience. We will alternate between walking and running the trails, gradually building up distance as the weeks progress.

Ideally, trail shoes should be worn as these provide better traction on uneven terrain. However, if you have a sturdy pair of running shoes with good grip these will be fine for starting out.

We meet each Saturday at 8.30am for a thorough warm-up. The first couple of weeks will start off with hurdles, climbing steps, and getting used to the different trail terrains. As we progress, we run/walk sections of trail. The trail that we will use is Minnowburn – a fairly groomed trail that is great for beginners. You will gain experience on different sections of this trail, making you more familiar with what to expect on different terrain, and how to handle it.

The in-person session will always be a Saturday morning, but there will be the option to also come on a mid-week night trail after you have completed 4 weeks of the programme. There will also be a Whatsapp group for accountability and support and the programme suggests when you should have rest days or cross-train.

We will have a trail runner ‘graduation’ at one of Northern Ireland’s trail park runs! (location TBC) This is your chance to put into practice all that you’ve learned throughout the 8 weeks.

After this, you will be most welcome to join the TrailRunNI community as a member and take part in our weekly trail runs!
